I frowned at Evie as she stood on my doorstep with a bag in her hand. ‘You think I’m going to let you in with that? What the hell is it?’ I wrinkled my nose at the offending item as Evie, my best friend in the world and the homicide team’s analyst, held up the bag. But I didn’t need a closer look. I’d seen perfectly well as she stepped into the light of my apartment. I was just wondering what the hell she was doing bringing it here.

‘It’s green tea with liquorice,’ she said, a huge grin on her face. ‘As I can no longer bring a bottle of wine with me for our nights in, and coming empty-handed felt a little unfriendly, I stopped by the supermarket on my way here to see what replacement I could find.’ There was a twinkle in her eye. ‘They say it’s good for your digestion if you’re nauseous. I thought it might help if you have any occasional ongoing problems.’ She waved the bag in front of my face again.

I snatched it from out of her hand and stomped away from her. She laughed behind me and closed the door.

As I was officially an addict, I couldn’t drink with Evie. Even though my addiction was to pills, an addictive personality could easily swap them for alcohol. This was one of the things that grated on me most. Not being able to go out for drinks and conversation with my best friend. Of course, we could go out and have a good time, Evie had reminded me. It would just be dry because she would stay sober too. Obviously not when we weren’t together. She wasn’t that dedicated.

I was grateful to her and the apology to Evie had been one of the quickest and easiest I’d made. She’d listened, accepted it and hugged me. It was as simple as that.

I stomped into the kitchen with this abomination that was not a bottle of wine and filled up the kettle.

‘Oh, we’re actually going to drink it?’ said Evie behind me.

‘You brought it into my home, you get to try it with me, young lady.’ It was my turn to grin.

Evie laughed and raised her eyebrows. ‘I should have thought this one through.’

Once the drinks were made we settled on the sofa, mugs on the coffee table. I was unsure if they’d be touched again. The smell wasn’t as awful as I’d imagined though.

Barney climbed onto the sofa and rested his large head on Evie’s lap.

‘I never thought I’d see you with a dog,’ she said, a hand on his shoulders.

‘Me neither,’ I admitted. ‘But he’s been so good for me. I couldn’t imagine being without him.’ His eyes were closed, his breathing soft and even. He was happy and content. ‘How’s it going with Sam?’ Sam was the guy Evie was living with. I never thought I’d see the day Evie would settle down. She’d always been fickle in relationships, until a bump at traffic lights with Sam and she hadn’t looked back.
